The Phi Beta Kappa Society, founded on 5 December 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, is generally recognized to be the first Greek-letter student society. African-American life was never the same with the inception of these fraternities and sororities. These were initiated as mutual help groups, where help with scholarships, educational matters, social matters was extended to the members.
